Reading Passenger Locomotive, Illinois
Another transitional locomotive design built in the Reading Railway shops in 1852. With its spidery 7 foot wrought iron driving wheels, this express locomotive was distinctive in appearance and unlike any other. Unfortunately the boiler was incapable of providing enough steam, even when burning a combination of wood and coal, so the cylinder diameter was reduced by 2 inches. The locomotive continued in service till 1869.
