Early Container Shipping

From November 1936 Nation Geographic.

A forerunner of the modern 20 and 40 ft shipping containers, these boxes were loaded 5 to a 40 foot flatcar and greatly simplified LCL (Less than Carload) shipping. Presumably the footprint of 8 x10 feet would suit the train car and the narrower dimension would allow them to be also shipped by truck.
