Pit Sawyers


Marjorie & C.H.B. Quennell.  A History of Everyday Things in England.  
The Age of Production 1851-1948.  B.T. Batsford Ltd., 1934, 1948, Fourth Edition.
They were using this method in Britain as late as 1934?  I'd hate to be the guy in the sawpit!

I think the worse job is up top. Using your weight to pull down is a lot easier than lifting up. Sounds back breaking!
