Classic Bike, Autumn 1978 |
This is a cutaway model of the first Ariel square four, in-unit transmission, the four 51mm cylinders topped with a single overhead cam made for a very compact and dense engine. With the rear cylinders exhausting through the front, overheating had to be an issue from the start, but maybe the thought was the 7.5:1 compression wouldn't generate that much heat. The next model was not OHC and the transmission was separate. Below is a different angle and luxury! in colour.
