Box of Russell Jennings Spur Auger Bits
This beautiful box of bits was at an antique mall. Not cheap, but if I had any plans to ever use a brace and bit again, I would have been tempted. We covered the history of Russell Jennings in an earlier post on Irwin Auger Bits.

My dad collected Jennings bits, so I have several lifetime's supply; some of them in those boxes. I use the smaller ones but the prize is a 2 1/2" dia bit, apparently used for shipbuilding, that I use as a visual reference when I hand-sharpen the smaller ones. It's so much better than trying to follow a picture.
I really don't like spade bits but I'm not ready to go back to brace and bit. Maybe I'll experiment with filing a hex instead of the square and try an auger bit in a cordless drill...
