Free engine? Oh boy!
I'm also confused by the "Self starting chain drive." Hopefully someone comes along who's more familiar with 1909 advertising parlance.

Free engine as in "clutch equipped", no need to restart after every stop, and I bet self-starting meant a kickstart, freeing you from the need of bystanders to push-start you on your way. Huuuge improvement, can't argue with that.
My favorite model was the Flying. Squirrel. I've seen theanimal but never the motorbike.
