Cal Rodgers and the first transcontinental flight, 1911

Milton Caniff, the artist of the piece above, was famous for his creations Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon.  During World War II, he created a special comic exclusively for the armed forces called Male Call featuring "Miss Lace."  Va va voom!  See also his work in the 1942 US Army/Navy publication, How to Spot a Jap.

Did Hearst pay Rodgers the $50,000 prize?

No, the prize was for doing it in 30 days, Rogers took 3 months. A few months later he was killed in a flying crash.
