On the Level: Disston

The old Philadelphia firm of Henry Disston & Sons, best known for its saws, is the subject of many histories on the web.  See especially Workshop of the World Philadelphia.  (They apparently also had a factory in Toronto.)  Their family history is also fascinating,  For instance, according to The Disston History, a site created by a family member, Henry's son Hamilton was at one time the largest private land owner in the U.S., and was the driving force behind the swamp drainage and land speculation in Florida.

One of the original Disston saw factories is now being used for an art project entitled Running True.  Visit it to see an interesting way to interpret the artifacts found abandoned there.
