Bardic Ferry cross section

 Artwork by Laurence Dunn

This rear-loading ferry was the world's first roll on, roll off cargo ferry, built by Wm. Denny of Dunbarton, Scotland for the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. as part of their program to replace their original fleet of LSTs.  Bardic Ferry was launched in 1957 for service between Larne, Ireland and Preston, UK. It served till 1976 when it was sold to an Italian company and scrapped in 1983.

Seems almost identical to the smelly, rattling ferry we took from Liverpool to The Isle Of Man in the 90's. We were directed down the ramp to a lower deck where we parked our motorcycles side by side on the kickstand, then a thick strap was laid over the seats and tightened down to the floor (sorry, DECK). After the passengers were gone, thinking they had tied their own bikes down, the crew came and REALLY snugged the straps, bending about 5 percent of the kickstands but causing surprisingly little damage to the seats and subframes.

Would the one you were on sideloading or rear loading? Wikipedia seems to say IoM ferries of the time were sideloading. Very similar appearance though.
