Mr Fooks was an British motoring artist who turned out drawings for magazines of bicycles, motorcycles and cars from the 1930s through the '50s.

Externally, at least, it's the prettiest postwar British engine. (Says who? Me.) Like, "Get an eyeful of what WWII taught us about aluminium founding."
But the cylinders in the photograph look black. Did the earliest S-7s use cast iron for them? --rats
It was a modern design for sure, the bike was let down by lack of power and a worm gear arrangement in the final drive. I've always liked them and expect that the cylinders were still cast iron.

From the start, it was an alloy engine block, integral cylinders and iron liners. I always was fond of their look too.
