Introduced as the 'Flying Battleship" in 1939, the four engine PBY-2 flying boat patrol bomber suffered from having about half the range of the Catalina or Sunderland flying boats. As a result it served mostly as a transport though it did see combat in the Pacific as a bomber and for antisubmarine patrols. 217 were built, one remains at the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola.
