We could follow the lead of the Vincent V twin story, where two cylinder drawings were reputedly stacked askew, giving them the idea for a V twin. Believe it if you like... :-)
The British-built Commer Avenger omnibus chassis came out with a seriously slanted six cylinder petrol engine in 1949. M/B just copied them...
Many say stolen omnibus technology was behind M-B's midcentury racing successes.
