PT boat by Higgins

D.W. Fostle, Speedboat, Mystic Seaport Museum 1988
Both Higgins and Elco built PT boats in WW2. The Navy had initiated a design competition for a new torpedo boat in 1938, but the boat eventually chosen was a British design by former Supermarine manager Hubert Scott-Paine. They were powered by a 2490 cubic inch Packard V12 producing 1200 horsepower. This gave a top speed of 45 knots and a fuel consumption rate of 12 gallons per mile.
