The USS Jupiter was an innovative ship when it was launched in 1911, with the navy's first steam turbine electric propulsion system. 10 years later it was being outfitted with a flight deck and a new name, the USS Langley, to become the first American aircraft carrier. The aviation experiment was a success but by 1936 she was obsolete and was rebuilt once again, this time into a seaplane tender. She was sunk in the Pacific in 1942 by Japanese bombers while on the way to Java.
