Wright Brothers Glider

National Geographic Society, Those Inventive Americans, 1971


 The Wright brothers have a moment when a gust of wind interrupts a glider takeoff in 1911. No real damage, the next day Orville piloted the craft to a record breaking 9 3/4 minute soaring flight. The record lasted 10 years.

An unknown fact about the Wright Brothers is they had toyed with the idea of starting a ladder company before getting into making aircraft, as seen with this photo.

They were bored with bicycles but wanted to get up in the world, the ladder was more plausible than “flying”, who had heard of that?
