This is an interesting adjustment mechanism on a very big pair of (I guess we'll call them) pliers, though the jaws do seem to be for something specific. Ideas, anyone?

That's a pair of adjustable pipe tongs, like gas pliers useful in their day and a plumber's toolbox staple but not of much use today. "Browns" and later "Ashcroft" were the big brands.
