A tinker was a metal worker who travelled around repairing pots and pans and other household items. This photo was taken in 1940 near Kysuce, Slovakia. This man is wearing the traditional linen shirt and heavy felt pants. He walked around the countryside carrying a bag of tools and a roll of wire, working where needed.

Oh God, I'm so old I remember a knife grinder pushing his cart along our street, and a woman curb-crawling in a VW bettle, ringing a bell attached to the roof and selling ready-made soup.
Mid- 60s, must have been.
I still see the occasional knife guy with his cart and bell in Toronto.
Ask your barber what they pay to have thier scissors sharpened
Now she's married to a tinker lad
He comes from Huntley town
He mends pots and pans and paraffin lamps
And scours the country round
