Frank E. Dodman, Ships of the Cunard Line; Adlard Coles Ltd. 1955 |
The steel-hulled single screw steamer Etruria was built in 1884, along with her sister ship the Umbria. They were the last liners to carry auxiliary sails. She held the Blue Riband for 5 years (the unofficial speed record for the Atlantic crossing) with speeds approaching 20 knots.
The single screw was her downfall, several times in her career, the propeller shaft cracked or broke, once in the mid-Atlantic, leaving her stranded. Although sails were raised she was towed to the Azores where repairs were made. She was sold for scrap in 1909.
