George Abdill; This was Railroading, Bonanza Books 1958
The Minnetonka was one of four similar locomotives built by Smith and Porter to construct the Northern Pacificrailway. After serving on the eastern end of the railway, it was shipped either by ship around Cape Horn or by rail (the story varies) to the west coast where it was used to construct the western end of the line. No longer needed, it was sold to the Polson Logging company in 1895. Finally retired in 1928, the locomotive was found by the Northern Pacific and restored for Chicago's "Century of Progress" and the New Yorks World Fair. The locomotive is now on display in Duluth
