From the faint markings visible on the steel, this seems to be a brace from Millers Falls, however we have not been able to find the same design among the hundreds of similar braces with non-ratcheting mechanisms. The chuck has two jaws, with a smooth screw action, to hold a square bit. Please see close-up photos of the chuck design. Any information that will assist with identifying the model/design or age of the brace would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like a Rose patent chuck; quite old and could be 19th century.

Nice find if somebody dug that up somewhere.
Thanks for your reply! From the photos it definitely looks like the Rose-style chuck.
Does the large round end-knob look like rosewood to you'all?
My nugatory bet would be walnut.
I feel the word “Nugatory” will be a useful and valuable addition to my vocabulary.
