Mystery Mercedes Monday

This Daimler Benz cross section drawing turned up some time ago and is a bit of a mystery.  It is dated 4/03/1937 and is described as a the longitudinal cross section of a E-Motor. It follows the diesel engine layout below but is single cylinder with the injector pump on the back on the engine. Just what is it?
