The Fairey Delta 2 was commissioned in 1954 by the UK Ministry of Supply to investigate supersonic and transonic speeds. Two units were constructed and the record was set on March 10 1956. The record was held for over a year, when it was beaten by a McDonnell Voodoo. More here.
