The one in your picture, I believe, uses a fat pencil jammed into that square hole next to the handle. More modern gages have pins, and it looks like the Lee Valley one uses a rolling blade. But the older ones I've seen all use a pencil stuck into a hole.

How is the actual marking done? Is there a hidden scriber under the "saw" handle?
