Visualizing preignition

There is a difference between detonation/knock and preignition. As shown in the graphic, detonation happens after the timed spark event, when the unburned fuel/air mixture ignites in an uncontrolled manner, and pushes back against the flame front. Preignition happens before the timed spark event, when a hot spot (combustion deposits, exhaust valve, etc.) ignites the fuel/air mixture.

I was a spark plug engineer for over 20 years, so I'm just providing some additional information. I enjoy reading your blog.
