Oh come now, nobody wears (wore) a helmet for observed trials. It's not as if anyone ever fell off and landed on their head. Even the ubiquitous flat cloth cap functioned chiefly as a means of keeping the rider's cigarettes (or pipe) and Swan Vesta matches dry.

Wouldn't have been sold under than name in the UK- 'plonker' means a silly or stupid person :-)
