1950 Oldsmobile

The Hydramatic "Whirlaway" (That name deserved an early death) automatic transmission was introduced in 1949.
As they said, "Hydra-Matic offers the driver no gears to shift nor clutch to push, and a "set it and forget it" direction indicator. In addition the Oldsmobile offered "Whirlaway," which contributed to a smooth and speedy acceleration. Benefits of the Whirlaway include perfect control in traffic, blazing pick-up, perfect for passing, ideal on hills, etc. Benefits of Hydra-Matic driving include safer on slippery roads, two hands free for steering, driver can be as relaxed as passengers, saving of 10% - 15% on gas, saves wear and tear on tires and moving parts, etc."

I imagine the trans was named for this contemporary racehorse.
