I remember using a 12-Volt version; it came with a little bag of grit and did not need compressed air. To my naked eye it seemed to do a pretty good job; spark plugs got pretty filthy back then. Pro tip: when cleaning plugs from a tired engine, spray the tips first with carb or brake cleaner and let them dry or you end up with an oil-grit slurry on the tip.
