D.B. Smith & Company Blizzard Sprayer

In the late 19th century, De Wayne B. Smith was a farmer in Deerfield, New York.  He was typical of the early American tinkerers of the time, inventing and patenting a number of farming tools. He took notice of the atomizers that doctors used when spraying children's throats, and applied the same principle to insecticides to come up with a pressurized sprayer. (Shades of Allen DeVilbiss!) He formed a company to manufacture this product in 1888, and got around to patenting it (US 634962 A) in 1899.  The company went on to make many other products, including a steam car, the Elite, in 1901. The company continues today as The Fountainhead Group in Utica, New York, still making sprayers in the U.S.A.
