Apparently the original cab-overs were a workaround for maximum vehicle length restrictions. In a crash situation this might leave a driver feeling a bit vulnerable...

This early style of GMC cabover was nicknamed the "crackerbox"; it was replaced in 1969 by the GMC Astro 95 which lasted until the end of GMC heavy-duty tractor-trailer production in the mid '80s.
