The SS Leonard was built by Cammell Laird in England for the National Transcontinental Railway. It was used to connect the two parts of the railway line, crossing the St Lawrence river while the Quebec Bridge was being built in 1915-1918. Unusually, the railway track deck was designed to raise and lower to suit the loading ramps in any tide condition.
