Flat tank Sunbeams

For 1924 Sunbeam introduced an OHV engine for their 350 and 500c sporting motorcycles. Billed as gentlemen's racers, the model 8 and 9 were fast and attractive, being finished in gloss black with gold pinstriping. The Sunbeam company was known for their quality finishes.

Graham Walker, Murray Walker's dad to you and I, joined the company as racing manager at that time and the bikes enjoyed a successful racing career. 1928 marked the last year for the flat tank styling, after that they adopted the saddle tank which was placed over the lowered top frame tube.

In the second picture, note the small tool kit tucked between the chain runs - was it put there not to affect the balance, or because there was nowhere else to put it?
