I'd define apophenia as "thinking outside the box" :-) An ebay listing included the wrench as for an Essex or Ford. Interesting that on the 8N Ford tractor (of twenty years later), valve adjustment was done by grinding the end of the valve down.

Well, the eccentric wrench doesn't actually say 'tappet'. So then, what's it for? Now *I'm* going to be up all night.

Service info online says the eccentric wrench is used for adjusting timing chain tension.
rdguy's right, eccentric could be anything.
Now, making delusional connections as I did is called apophenia,
and *that's* worrying.

Timing chain tension seems right - I'd just about talked myself into thinking kingpin adjustment.
