White Freightliner made a succession of models called Mustangs. Don't know when the line began or ended (if it did), but there def were White Mustangs in the '50s. None of them (that I can see in 1.5 minutes' worth of research) were pudgy-fronted cab-overs, however.
The White Mustangs were a line of conventional trucks built by the White Motor Company. The White Motor Company was also the distributor for Freightliner trucks (badged as White Freightliners) from 1951 -1977 but those trucks had nothing in common with the line of White trucks other than sharing the same parent company. Not sure if the “Mustang” part of it had anything to do with the model of the truck or if it referred to the gasoline engine that was offered (both gas and diesel were options). The White Motor Company’s early White 3000 COEs came with a White Mustang flathead six, though later models eventually offered Cummins diesels. http://forums.justoldtrucks.com/uploads/images/c67fde89-3131-4a44-a89b-7d4a.jpg
Amazing, I had no idea there was actually a prototype, figuring it was just a kids toy. Also interesting that Ford introduced a Mustang less than a decade later. Thanks for the info!

Curiously beautiful faux-logo on the door.
