Rhoades hover scooter

This was apparently a device of American origin that was shown at the 1960 Cycle and Motorcycle Show held at Earls Court, London. It was powered by a two stroke twin motorcycle engine, though the make is not mentioned. Also not named is the impeccably dressed operator shown above. As so often often seems to happen with machines of this type- it then faded from public view...

Looks like the prototype of the Bartlett Hovercraft that used to be advertised in Boy's Life magazine. I bought a set of those blueprints once and promptly filed them away. Building and operating that thing could very easily leave me with a leg (or head) chopped off, plus there was no counter-rotation stabilizer. I could just visualize myself spinning round and round on a lake until I fell off and was cut to ribbons by the airplane propeller underneath the canvas sheath. Plus I didn't know where to try and source a 3HP lawnmower engine and especially an airplane prop.
