One of my vices is vises, Special Machine and Engineering

Here is a sleek little diecast aluminum vise with 1 1/8" wide jaws made by the Special Machine and Engineering company of Detroit, Michigan. Unusually, the front jaw is rigid, the rear one moves.
The company seems to have been tool and die makers in existence from about WW2 to at least 1980. It isn't known when this vise was introduced and long it was on the market.
I want one.

Thanks, John!

I want one too, but $180 price tag is a little too salty for my tastes

Looks like they had a tragic accident in the early 80's that might have led to the company closing even though they prevailed legally:

When I was doing a job at a GM axle plant an HVAC guy fell through a skylight and into a gear hobber. I didn't see it happen but I'm told it was like something out of a horror movie. When old factories are air-conditioned they will often paint over the skylights to cut down on sun load but that leads to people stepping on them.

Ugh, another worker accident. That was 1984 so we can assume they were still operating then.
