Back in the day, watchmen carried 5-pound clocks in a leather case, and their rounds took them by a series of stations containing a numbered key, which had to be inserted into the clock and turned to record a time on a strip of paper in the clock. The Detex Corporation was one of the largest manufacturers of such systems. Note that even the screws that secured the station to a wall were covered by a seal, presumably to make it impossible for a guard to remove them and carry them back to some central location where he could remain until the end of his shift before going around and replacing them.

A company in San Diego was still using them at the old Ryan air plane buildings, next to the San Diego International Airport in 2000
