The buffers look a bit incongruous on this American-designed and built locomotive but a large number of these United States Army Transportation Corps S160 Class Consolidations were exported to Britain to help in the war effort. After the invasion of Normandy, they disappeared from Britain, moved to the continent in military service. By wars end over two thousand were in service in Europe providing motive power on the rebuilt railways.
About twenty five units have been preserved in various countries, some in operating condition.
