My dad was an English teacher but he volunteered as a shipwright at a maritime museum and they get a lot of use out of large mortise chisels. I have his set and I use them at times; not always for chopping out mortises (my dad probably rolls in his grave if he sees how I put them to use, but they are handy for deck construction).

It is in fact a mortising chisel; informally known as a "pig sticker."
You can put a lot of leverage on them and they wont break, and replacement handles are easy to make.
Thank you Dave, I knew you’d know. This one was so dull, I wondered if the long tapered edges were somehow the business end.
