Later car radios, before the advent of low-voltage transistors, used inverters and transformers inside the radio chassis to increase the six (later twelve) volts from the car up to the high voltage needed by the tubes in the radio. If you've ever picked up the radio from a 50's era car you know there's a lot of heavy equipment inside.
