Bombardier Tools

Despite owning, borrowing and riding various Can Am motorcycles and Ski-Doos over the years I somehow have never run into a tool or toolkit for any Bombardier product. There seem to be at least two suppliers of these tool kits, we've seen Stubai and Heyco, possibly others- the search goes on.

Wooden shovel handles

Heaton-Peninsular Button-Fastener Co. Button fastening pliers

 

Heaton-Peninsular devised a mechanical way to staple buttons onto shoes in production, this pair of pliers was part of the system. The machine was supplied to the shoe companies with the stipulation that the shoe company must use only the staples that Button-Fastener made and sold. Another company- Eureka Specialty Co.- started supplying staples at a lower price, predictably, Heaton Peninsular sued. Their argument was that since they supplied the machines, they could dictate how the customers used the machine, Eureka argued that since the staples themselves weren't patented, they could not be subject to Heaton Peninsular's rules.

Steamship Martaban

 Here's a nice drawing of the wooden screw steamship Martaban built for the British and Burmese Navigation Co. in 1873.

 It appears to have been renamed Olbia in 1893 when it was sold to a French company and was broken up in June of 1906 in Genoa.

Monday Mystery... What is this?

 Looks like part of something, a nicely shaped piece of cast iron painted an unassuming utilitarian blue... Left side is a handle, the right side has a clamping-type knob...

Weems and Plath #142 navigation set

 Tools for navigation, which I know nothing about. 

7" One Hand Divider and a 15" acrylic parallel rule for working with charts. If I had a boat... err yacht, I'd carry this and display it prominently at all times, even if everyone uses GPS these days...
