Brockway Truck at the Owls Head Transportation Museum summer 2019.
William Brockway was a furniture maker in Homer, New York whose business expanded to the manufacture of carriages. When he passed away in 1889, his son George took over the business.
The business continued to grow and by 1909 George Brockway was investigating the possibility of manufacturing trucks. He invested in the Chase Truck company in Syracuse and in 1912 started manufacturing Brockway trucks in nearby Cortland, New York.
The company thrived, and Brockway became a major manufacturer of buses and trucks, selling across the continent. During WW2 they built specialized crane and bridging trucks for the military.
George Brockway passed away in 1953 and the company was sold to Mack who allowed the company to continue autonomously. In 1977, after some business troubles and labour unrest, Mack closed the Brockway plant.
