Stearman Hammond Y-1

The Hammond Y was a John Hammond designed aircraft done in the early thirties as an entry to a 1934 competition for a cheap, easy to fly aircraft, similar to the Ford Model T in concept.  Hammond and Lloyd Stearman teamed up to make a production version and the Stearman Hammond company was formed in 1936 to build the craft. Interestingly, to keep control simple, the rudders were locked during flight, turning being done with elevator and ailerons. Despite a promotional tour across the country, no buyers were found.
Both the US and Royal Air Forces did some evaluations and one was used for some radio-controlled tests, but in the end only about 20 were built.
