1909 air show in Paris

A view of the main hall of the Grand Palais in Paris, during the first exhibition of aeronautics, September 1909. Absolutely stunning. The exposition featured all aspects of flying- both lighter and heavier than air.

Balloons in the Grand Palais

Colour autochromes by photographer Léon Gimpel, who was actively following balloon experiments in France at the time.

Stunning is right! Everything in those photos is a work of art. The detail is exceptional. No pop up displays or banners here.

I imagine the crowds, more used to horsedrawn carriages and wagons, walking through the doors and being absolutely blown away.
