Very popular with the Russians during WWII. M.Silvius is correct worked very well especially in the winter.
The aviation equivalent of the motorcycle starting rollers. I was at an airshow where a Corsair wouldn't quite go, saved by a pair of portable booster packs!
Russians were big on using compressed air starters. Actually a great, simple, easy system compared to all that sparky stuff:)
Or the shotgun shell starter.
