We used to make things in this country #318 Wm. Kennedy & Sons

One of the many machines designed during WW1, to facilitate the manufacture of artillery shells, a huge business during WW1. The machine manufacturer was a large casting and machining company in Owen Sound, Ontario.

Wm Kennedy and Sons was started by Scottish Millwright William Kennedy who after installing the machinery for a grist mill in 1856, decided to stay in Owen Sound. He started a small wood planing mill, soon expanding into millwork. His machining experience came to the fore and he soon began building agricultural and industrial machinery also metal parts and equipment for boats as Owen Sound became a busy port. The firm became known for ship's propellers, eventually dominating the market on the Great Lakes. The firm remained in family hands till 1951, when a British company bought it, and it was sold again 10 years later to an Ohio company, bringing a new name; Black Clawson-Kennedy. The company continued to grow but business fluctuated, becoming unprofitable and the doors were closed permanently in 1996. The buildings have been demolished.
