903 isn't enough anymore
After 6 years at 903 cc, Kawasaki bumped up the displacement of their flagship to 1015cc in 1977. With the Goldwing at 1000 cc, Suzuki on the verge of releasing the GS1000, and the Yamaha XS1100 in the wings, Kawasaki must have been feeling a bit threatened.

I worked with an ex-roadracer and prize a-hole at the __________ Bros.' Yamaha-Kawasaki dealership in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prospective buyers weren't allowed to test-ride the Z1 themselves; instead, this guy was deputed to take them out as passengers. If he didn't care for the prosp. buyer he would deliberately terrify them and, upon returning to the shop, laugh at them publicly and quote the plea they would have uttered -- "Slow dowwwwn!" -- in a high squeaky baby voice.
Despite, or because of, this experience, a lot of the humiliated guys went ahead and put themselves on the waiting list to buy the bike. Prepaid in full, of course.
A true salesman.
