This a fairly small vice with narrow 2" jaws. The A.M. Co. logo indicates pre 1921 (info from Mivise.com) but an unusual feature is the key slot mount. I haven't seen any other Athol vises online with that feature.

Beazld, send me cash in 1900 dollars and I'll send it on. :-) This one was $100 at the antique market- vises have gotten expensive.
The key slot mount doesn't seem like a good idea, I wouldn't think the narrow base would be stable in use, leading to overtightening of the nut and as you say, breakage.
