Santa Fe Super Chief, 1949

The new diesel streamliners on the Santa Fe passenger service followed a southwest native theme, the orange and silver paint was nicknamed the war bonnet scheme. Nevertheless, this seems a rather fanciful portrayal of the relationship...

Given all those ashtrays one has to wonder how well the vibrant colors held up in that "observation" car. It must have been hard to see the sights through the haze of cigar smoke.

Just gave everything a deeper richer tone. Amazing we used to accept the smoke in the air as normal, in offices, restaurants, everywhere. Never gave it a thought.

We still accept the "smell" of smoke as normal. The fact is we have gone nose blind to the automobile fumes that permeate every square inch of our cities. They create an all encompassing, near invisible cloud about half a mile high. You can pick them out at sunset, they are the yellow tinge before the other colours higher up. Currently they cause about 8 million deaths a year.
