In the future, hovercrafts...

Robert Blackburn, New Horizon Book of Flying, Golden Pleasure Books, 1963

The Saunders-Roe Nautical 1 was the world's first full size hovercraft. On July 25 1959, a SRN1 crossed the English channel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bleriot's flight.

I did one cross-Channel round trip on one. Unbelievably noisy and bone-jarring
ride. Zero visibility from passenger deck level, you travel in a cloud of mist.
All the romance of a washing machine on spin cycle. :-) Never again.

Hovercrafts actually did achieve some commercial use, most visibly for routes across the channel. Thanks for the first hand report! Noise was always an issue, not just for the passengers but for everyone living nearby. The cross channel route was cancelled in 2000.
