Removing broken studs

Once again, shown mainly for the drawing and line work- lovely illustration from a prewar British motorcycle magazine, artist not mentioned...

But technically, the top technique could work- if not too corroded, expanding the bolt with a tapered drift is a risky thing. The bottom view is pure fantasy, when did anyone ever have a stud or bolt break off above the surrounding surface, and second, filing a couple of flats without marring the gasket surface would be a skill beyond a lot of people, and finally... throw that useless adjustable wrench away and use visegrips/molegrips.

I have an adjustable wrench very much like that one. Has a limited use with the old square nuts. I got it from my Father who got it from his Father I think(Grandpa born in 1880).

Looks like the start of production for US Vise-grips and UK Mole-grips was
late 30s and early 50s respectively, so they may not have been common tools
pre-war. Lousy advice anyway, for not mentioning heat and penetrating oil.
